Botox Q & A
What is Botox?
Botox is the cosmetic form of botulinum toxin, which derives from the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. Botox is injected into a muscle, which temporarily blocks the nerve signal to that muscle. As a result, the muscle cannot contract, ultimately making wrinkles less noticeable.
What areas can Botox treat?
Botox can be a tool to:
- Smooth crow’s feet, frown lines, forehead creases, and lip lines
- Improve skin dimpling at the chin
- Diminish neck bands
- Soften a square jawline
- Lift the corners of the mouth
Botox also has proven to be effective in relieving excessive sweating. Talk to Dr. Roy to see if Botox is an excellent choice for you.
Who is a good candidate for Botox?
Wrinkles appear as the result of regular facial movements: smiling, frowning, blinking, and even chewing your food. That’s why even young people may notice fine lines or wrinkles.
If you think that wrinkles are affecting your appearance and making you look sad or angry when you’re not, Botox may be a good option. It works for adults of any age.
What can I expect during a Botox treatment session?
Although the treatment sessions are short–about 15 minutes–it is a delicate, painstaking procedure. Practitioners like Dr. Roy must target the right muscle for optimal results. That means injecting only the wrinkle-causing muscles, not those that control your natural facial expressions.
Depending on what areas you’re having treated, you may need more than one injection. For crow’s feet, two or three injections are often necessary. Forehead creases require as many as five.
What is the recovery period?
The good news is that you can resume your normal activities right away following Botox injections. To protect the treated areas, don’t rub or massage them. Give them a chance to heal.
Immediately following the procedure, some people may experience some side effects, which usually don’t last long. They include:
Pain and bruising at the treated area
- A headache
- Temporary facial weakness and drooping
Expect to see some results within a few days, with the full effect evident in about a week. The treatment will last about three to four months.
